Google has a pattern: it builds automation as a separate campaign type first, then folds the automation into the campaigns you already run. Performance Max was the separate campaign. AI Max is the fold-in — a switch inside ordinary Search campaigns that hands Google's AI control over which queries you match, what your ads say, and where clicks land. Since its 2025 rollout it has moved from beta curiosity to a default suggestion in nearly every Indian ad account, which means advertisers now need an actual position on it rather than a shrug.
This guide explains what the suite genuinely changes, where the reported gains come from, and — because most of my readers run lean budgets — when an Indian small advertiser should enable it, leave it off, or enable it with the brakes deliberately tightened.
The Three Things AI Max Actually Does
Search term matching. Your keywords stop being a fence and become a seed. The system uses your keywords, ads, and landing pages to decide what your campaign is "about," then matches you to queries beyond your keyword list — including long, conversational queries that have no exact keyword equivalent. This is broad match's logic, but applied campaign-wide and informed by your creative and site content rather than keywords alone.
Asset optimisation. Google's AI generates and tests new headlines and descriptions based on your existing ads, your landing page, and the specific query — so the ad a searcher sees may contain text you never wrote. Assets adapt toward what each query suggests the searcher wants.
Final URL expansion. The system can send a click to a different page on your site than the one you specified, when it predicts that page answers the query better — someone searching for your Kochi branch timing may land on your Kochi page even though your campaign pointed at the homepage.
Each piece can be toggled independently. That granularity is the feature most advertisers miss: "AI Max on or off" is rarely the right question; "which of the three components do I trust for this campaign" is.
AI Max vs Performance Max vs Broad Match — Untangling the Three
The confusion is understandable because the marketing language overlaps. Broad match is a keyword-level setting: looser matching, same ads, same landing pages. Performance Max is a separate campaign type that spends across every Google surface — Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Maps — with generated creative, covered in our practical PMax setup guide. AI Max sits between them: it stays inside Search only (no Display or YouTube inventory), but automates matching, ad text, and landing pages within it.
That "Search-only" boundary is why AI Max appeals to advertisers who were burned by PMax's opacity — lead-gen businesses that found PMax spending their budget on low-quality Display placements. AI Max's expansion stays on the search results page, where intent is highest. If your business lives and dies on search intent — most Indian service businesses do — AI Max is the automation worth evaluating first.
What the Numbers Say, and How to Read Them
Google's launch data claimed advertisers typically saw around 14% more conversions or conversion value at similar CPA or ROAS, rising to roughly 27% for campaigns that previously used mostly exact and phrase match. Read those figures the way you'd read any vendor benchmark: real but selected, and mechanically explained. Campaigns on tight exact-match keywords have the most unmatched demand sitting adjacent to them, so loosening the fence finds more volume; campaigns already running broad match see far smaller lifts because the expansion already happened.
In the Indian accounts I've reviewed since rollout, the pattern holds with one caveat: the gains concentrate where conversion tracking is genuinely accurate. The AI optimises toward whatever you count as a conversion — if your "conversions" include junk form fills and accidental WhatsApp clicks, AI Max will efficiently buy you more junk. Fix measurement before automation; it's the same prerequisite we flagged for small-budget accounts in our ₹10,000-a-month Google Ads playbook.
Should Indian Small Advertisers Turn It On?
Enable it confidently when three conditions hold: your conversion tracking counts real business outcomes (qualified leads, purchases, not page views); your monthly budget gives the system at least 30–50 conversions to learn from; and your offering is broad enough that query expansion helps (a general dental clinic, a multi-service agency, an e-commerce store with range).
Stay cautious when you sell one narrow thing — a CA who only does company incorporations, a tutor for one exam — because expansion mostly buys adjacent-but-wrong queries; when your budget is under roughly ₹15,000 a month, where learning data is thin and a few bad matched queries are a meaningful share of spend; or when regulatory wording matters (finance, health, education claims), since generated ad text can phrase things your compliance review never saw. In those cases, enable search term matching alone and keep asset generation off — the granular toggles exist precisely for this.
The Controls That Prevent Wasted Spend
Four settings do most of the protective work. Brand controls: brand inclusions restrict matching to queries containing your brand (for defence campaigns), while brand exclusions stop your generic campaigns showing on competitor names — set these first, because competitor-name traffic in India converts poorly and invites bidding wars. URL exclusions: block final URL expansion from landing on your blog, careers page, or privacy policy; clicks to non-commercial pages are paid-for dead ends. Locations of interest: AI Max can target by geographic intent within a query ("plumber in Thrissur" vs searcher located in Thrissur) — align this with how your service area actually works. Negative keywords: they still apply and they're still your sharpest tool; an AI Max campaign without a maintained negative list is a leaky bucket with a smarter pump.
The Weekly Monitoring Routine
AI Max increases the importance of the search terms report exactly as it reduces your pre-approval of queries. Weekly, for the first six weeks: review search terms sorted by spend, add negatives for the inevitable off-target themes, and check the "matched by" attribution to see which terms came from AI Max expansion versus your keywords. Review the asset report for generated headlines — you can remove specific generated assets that misrepresent your offer. Watch the landing page report if URL expansion is on, confirming clicks land where conversion is possible. The discipline is the same one that separates profitable accounts from donations to Google; automation changes where you supervise, not whether.
A Worked Rollout: Kochi Dental Clinic, ₹30,000 a Month
Here's the sequence I'd run for a representative account — a multi-chair dental clinic in Kochi spending ₹30,000 monthly on Search, currently on phrase-match keywords for implants, aligners, and root canal treatment, with conversion tracking firing on appointment form submissions and call clicks.
Week 0 — prerequisites. Audit conversions first: exclude the staff IP addresses, confirm call clicks under ten seconds aren't counted, and import offline "appointment kept" data if the clinic's reception can tag it. Build the negative list from twelve months of search terms history — the jobs-and-courses cluster ("dental assistant vacancy kochi", "BDS admission") always lurks around clinic keywords.
Week 1 — partial enable. Switch on AI Max with search term matching only; leave asset optimisation and URL expansion off. Medical wording stays human-written, and clicks keep landing on the treatment pages the clinic chose. Set brand exclusions for the three competitor clinic names that already appear in search terms, and locations of interest to the clinic's actual catchment — Ernakulam district, not "Kerala".
Weeks 2–6 — supervised learning. Weekly search terms review, fifteen minutes: add negatives, note which expanded queries convert. In accounts like this, expansion typically surfaces long conversational queries ("how much does a full mouth implant cost in kochi for senior citizen") that phrase match never caught — exactly the demand worth paying for.
Week 7 — extend or hold. If CPA holds within 15% of baseline while volume grows, enable asset optimisation next, reviewing generated headlines weekly for medical-claim wording and removing any that overpromise. URL expansion stays off permanently here — the clinic's blog would soak up clicks meant for treatment pages. That's the full discipline: one component at a time, each earning its place with data.
The Mistakes Showing Up in Audits
Three patterns repeat. Enabling everything on day one in an account with sloppy conversion tracking — the AI learns to chase the wrong outcome and then "optimises" away from your actual customers. Judging it in week one — matching expansion needs a learning period, and early CPAs run high before settling; decide on four to six weeks of data, not four days. And treating it as fire-and-forget — the advertisers seeing the reported lifts are reviewing search terms weekly, not discovering in month three that a quarter of spend went to queries they'd never have approved.
AI Max is also a preview of where search advertising is heading as Google reshapes the results page around AI experiences — ads are following the same conversational turn that organic visibility took with AI Overviews. Advertisers who learn to supervise AI-driven matching now are building the operating skill the next five years of Google Ads will demand. If you'd like an audit of whether your account is ready for it — tracking, structure, and controls — my digital marketing services include exactly that review.
