Frequently Asked Questions
What is the GST rate in India?
India uses four primary GST slabs. The 5% slab covers essential goods and services like packaged foods and small restaurant meals. The 12% slab applies to processed foods, computers, and business-class travel. The 18% slab covers most services including IT, telecom, banking fees, and restaurants. The 28% slab targets luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco, and aerated beverages. A 0% rate applies to basic necessities such as fresh vegetables, milk, and educational services.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are collected together for transactions within the same state — each gets exactly half of the total GST rate. On an 18% intra-state transaction, 9% goes to the central government as CGST and 9% to the state as SGST. IGST (Integrated GST) applies when goods or services cross state borders — the full rate is collected by the central government and then distributed to the destination state.
How do I calculate 18% GST on an amount?
To add 18% GST: multiply the base amount by 0.18, then add it to the base. On ₹10,000 — GST = ₹1,800, total = ₹11,800. For intra-state, CGST = ₹900 and SGST = ₹900. To extract GST from a GST-inclusive total: divide the total by 1.18 to get the base, then subtract. On ₹11,800 — base = ₹10,000, GST = ₹1,800. This calculator handles both directions automatically.
