Frequently Asked Questions
How many characters can a tweet have?
Twitter (now called X) allows up to 280 characters per tweet for most users. Twitter Blue (X Premium) subscribers can post longer tweets — up to 25,000 characters. The 280-character limit applies to the text of your tweet; images, videos, and GIFs do not count toward this limit.
How many characters does a URL take in a tweet?
Every URL in a tweet is automatically shortened by Twitter's t.co link wrapper and counts as exactly 23 characters, regardless of the original URL length. This means a long URL like https://www.example.com/very/long/path still only uses 23 of your 280 characters. Our counter accounts for this automatically.
Do emojis count as more than one character on Twitter?
Yes, most emojis count as 2 characters on Twitter because they use Unicode code points above U+FFFF (called surrogate pairs). Standard ASCII characters count as 1 character each. Some complex emoji sequences (like skin-tone modifiers or ZWJ sequences) can count as even more. Our counter uses the same Unicode weighting that Twitter applies.
