Measuring Results: GA4 & Search Console

Without measurement, SEO is guesswork. Two free Google tools cover almost everything a small business needs.

The two essential tools

Google Search Console shows how your site performs specifically in Google search: which queries you appear for, average position, click-through rate, and any indexing problems. Google Analytics 4 (GA4) shows what happens after someone arrives — which pages they visit, how long they stay, and whether they convert (contact form, WhatsApp click, phone call). Search Console tells you if you are being found; GA4 tells you if what they find is working.

Organic traffic — last 10 weeks ▲ 62%

Organic traffic should show a steady upward trend over months, not days — SEO is a compounding channel.

Metrics that matter — and ones that mostly don't

  • Track closely: organic traffic trend over months, keyword rankings for priority terms, organic conversions (enquiries, calls, bookings), and indexed-pages count.
  • Treat cautiously: day-to-day traffic swings (normal noise), pure pageview counts without conversion context, and any single keyword's exact position (rankings fluctuate constantly even with no changes).

Set a monthly review rhythm

SEO moves in months, not days. A practical monthly routine: check Search Console for new indexing errors, review which queries are gaining or losing position, confirm organic conversions in GA4, and pick 2–3 fixes or new pages for the coming month based on what the data shows. Consistency in measurement is what turns SEO from a one-off project into a compounding channel.
