Chapter 9 of 11

AEO & GEO — Optimising for AI Search

Search has split into two channels: Google's classic blue links, and AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Ranking well on one no longer guarantees visibility on the other.

What AEO and GEO actually mean

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is structuring content so AI systems can extract a direct, self-contained answer from it. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) goes a step further — making sure your business is understood as a distinct, trustworthy entity, so AI systems recommend and cite you by name when someone asks a broader question, not just when they type your exact keyword.

AI answer engines pull structured, quotable content directly into their responses — with a citation.

How AI systems choose what to cite

Unlike classic search, an AI answer engine typically synthesises one response from a handful of sources, then cites only the ones it judged clearest and most directly useful. That favours content that:

  • States a direct, complete answer in the first sentence of a section — not buried after a long preamble.
  • Uses clear headings that read like the exact question a user would ask.
  • Is backed by structured data (FAQ schema, how-to schema) that makes the answer machine-readable.
  • Comes from a source with clear, consistent entity signals — an About page, author bio, and consistent business details across the web.

A practical starting point

Add a genuine FAQ section to your most important pages, phrased exactly as customers would ask ("How much does local SEO cost in Kerala?"), each followed by a direct, complete answer in 2–3 sentences before any elaboration. This single change tends to improve both classic SEO snippet eligibility and AI citation rates, because it serves the same underlying need: a fast, complete, extractable answer.

AEO and GEO do not replace traditional SEO — they sit on top of the same technical and content foundation covered in Chapters 3–5. Get those right first.
