Chapter 7 of 11

Local SEO & Google Business Profile

For any business serving a specific city or region, local SEO usually delivers faster, higher-intent results than general SEO.

Google Business Profile is your most important local asset

Claim and fully complete your free Google Business Profile: exact business name (no keyword stuffing), correct category, service area, hours, photos, and a complete description. An incomplete profile is the single most common reason a genuinely good local business is invisible in the "map pack" (the three local results shown above organic listings for searches like "SEO agency near me").

The map pack and business profile card often outrank the organic results below them.

The three local ranking factors

  • Relevance — how well your profile and category match the search.
  • Distance — how close your registered location is to the searcher (or the area they searched).
  • Prominence — how well-known and well-reviewed your business is, both on Google and across the web generally.

You cannot change distance for a given search, but relevance and prominence are entirely within your control.

Reviews compound

Reviews affect prominence and, just as importantly, affect whether a searcher who does find you actually clicks through and contacts you. Ask satisfied customers directly and immediately after a good outcome — the single biggest driver of review volume is simply asking at the right moment, not any clever trick.

Consistency matters as much as completeness — your business name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear online (website, GBP, directories, social profiles).
